Internet of Things in Healthcare

It looks like a Keurig coffee machine, but it could save hospitals (and American taxpayers) millions of dollars every year. Meet Livi® from PharmRight—a highly advanced, fully automated home medication dispenser and Internet of Things healthcare device.

The Challenge

PharmRight posed the following question: What if a device could simulate the careful supervision of an on-site physician or caregiver by delivering the right medication, at the right time, in the right quantity, with the right instructions?

It could help to resolve one of the biggest problems in healthcare: repeat hospital visits due to improper (or missed) medication dosage.

PharmRight had the great idea to create a machine that could not only dispense meds and prompt patients to take their meds properly, but it would also let caregivers be aware of all dosages and alert them to missed cycles. More cycles done right, fewer cycles missed, fewer repeat visits, lower healthcare costs.

But first, PharmRight had to make Livi an “Internet of Things” device that could connect & communicate properly to all parties and share very private, very critical information with the right people.

Enter Zipit.

The Solution

Because of our years of experience developing solutions in Healthcare IT, and our deep understanding of information security requirements, PharmRight selected Zipit to help them bring their IoT solution to market.

This work included:

  • Providing the connectivity platform for PharmRight's dispensing devices
  • Automatically managing device activations
  • Setting up PharmRight's Livi administration portal for caregivers 
  • Developing a support portal for PharmRight to troubleshoot customers' devices
  • Architecting the back end cloud infrastructure to ensure information security

Our technology also enables each Livi device to automatically send an alert to a caregiver or authorized family member when the device needs to be refilled with the patient's medications or if the patient fails to take their scheduled dose within a certain time period. 

The Result

Now, each device's administrator (physician or caregiver) can schedule and monitor all medication levels and patient interactions remotely and securely, allowing patients to maintain their independence in their own homes, while also ensuring they maintain adherence to their necessary medication schedules.
